Afin d'éviter de se concurrencer sur le même créneau, Warner Bros. et 20th Century Fox s'unirent sur ce projet, la Warner rachetant les droits de The Tower de Richard Martin et la Fox ceux de The Glass Inferno de Thomas N. Scortia et Frank M. Robinson. Le titre original du film The Towering Inferno est ainsi le résultat d'un mélange des titres des deux romans dont s'inspire le film, tout comme le nom de l'immeuble en feu The Glass Tower. Le scénariste Stirling Silliphant a également fait attention à bien mélanger dans son scénario les deux romans : il reprend ainsi les trames principales des deux histoires tout en réunissant sept des personnages principaux de chaque roman.
