.Lorsque La Grande évasion fut projeté au Festival de Moscou, le film provoqua un mini-scandale. Le public russe fut en effet choqué de voir la manière dont étaient traités les prisonniers anglais et américains en période de guerre. Selon eux, leur emprisonnement était relativement confortable en comparaison avec le sort réservé aux soldats russes dans les camps allemands.

Finalement, Don Siegel tricha, fit un plan de coupe et mit des gouttes dans les yeux de l'acteur.

 .Le tournage ne fut décidément pas de tout repos, retardé par de graves accidents. La Ferrari de Dereck Bell prit feu et le conducteur fut brûlé au visage et aux mains ; David Piper fut amputé de la jambe droite après avoir percuté sa Porsche 917 contre un garde-fou et Steve McQueen frôla la mort en évitant de peu un camion à trois cents à l'heure.
